After grabbing headlines worldwide a month ago for opening their first store in India to serpentine queues, the Swedish home furnishing retailer has been fined after a customer allegedly found an insect in the food served the store.
Abeed Mohammad found a caterpillar in the vegetable biryani he ordered at the IKEA Hyderabad store on Friday.
He tweeted the images and alerted the local Food Safety authority and tagged the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development KT Rama Rao in the tweet.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) levied a fine of INR 11,500 (225 AUD) and issued a notice to the IKEA restaurant manager.
The authorities have also issued a notice to Haldirams, the vendor responsible for supplying food to IKEA.
On Saturday, GHMC officials reportedly visited the store and collected food samples for bacteriological analysis tests at a lab.

IKEA India apologized and said, “We apologize for the unfortunate experience. We are investigating the matter and will take immediate corrective action. At IKEA, we have the strictest guidelines when it comes to food quality as customer health and safety are something we care about deeply.
Ikea opened its first store in Hyderabad, India on August 9 after almost a decade’s planning. Its next store is expected to open in Navi Mumbai in 2019, followed by Bengaluru and Delhi. In the next phase, IKEA would cover Ahmedabad, Surat, Pune, Chennai, and Kolkata.
