On February 7th, around 11:00 Local time, a massive flash flood hit the Tapovan region in the Indian state of Uttarakhand after part of the Nanda Devi glacier broke away.
The Rishiganga Hydroelectric Project Dam was washed away, and another under-construction hydro-electricity project was heavily damaged.
The floods were caused when a large chunk of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off and fell in the Dhauliganga river.

The Dhauliganga river flooded near Reni village in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand.

The Rishiganga Hydroelectric Project on the Dhauliganga river was wiped out in the heavy deluge of water.

More than 170 people are still missing, while 26 bodies have been found by the rescue operation workers.

Many like Rani Devi are family members of victims who rushed to the sites of the disaster to look for their loved ones. Rani searched for her husband Teerath Singh who worked at the hydroelectric power plant and is among those missing.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is conducting rescue operations, helping the relatives of those missing.

Rescue operations are underway day and night to look for survivors of the catastrophic floods.

The rushing water brought with it a huge mass of mud, sludge and debris that blocked the tunnel at one of the hydropower plants.

Unstable ground due to the deluge has made it difficult to conduct rescue operations.

Reni village, the centre of the famous ecological movement, Chipko Movement, has among the areas affected by the floods.
