The Inaugural National Conference on Migration, Media and Integration/Social cohesion was held on 31st May and 1st June 2016 in Melbourne.
It was hosted by Africa Media Australia in partnership with the National Ethic Multicultural Broadcasters’ Council, Monash University and the University of Adelaide.
The conference discussed several issues facing the ethnic communities, new migrants and refugees in Australian society today. One of the core issue discussed was the integration of migrants within the Australian society and the speakers shared their ideas and initiatives they had taken to address this issue.
The conference brought together prominent speakers from key state and national organisations and focussed on promoting a better understanding of the extent and depth of media discourses on the lives of migrants and refugees, with a special focus on new and emerging communities.
Victoria’s Minister of Multicultural Affairs, Hon. Robin Scott spoke of his experience while working with the multicultural fabric of the society. He cited his own personal example of how his wife got a job interview after she changed her name to a more anglo-saxon name.
SBS Hindi’s Kumud Merani represented SBS Radio at the conference and spoke about the role SBS plays in providing news, information and guide to settling down in Australia to new migrants. In her speech, Ms. Merani said, “SBS, as a media organisation, has enormous obligations to encourage and inspire social cohesion, in order for new migrants and refugees to feel at home and to participate in their new communities. We have various program segments like the SBS Radio Settlement guide in 27 different languages in which we produce and broadcast a guidance about life and issues that affect new migrants and refugees to settle and integrate in this society.
