India makes it to the finals of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup

Rain washed out the first semi-final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup between India and England on Thursday noon.

With no reserve day allocated for the semi-finals, India has progressed to the World Cup final.

The game was abandoned due to rain brought in by Tropical Storm Esther.

The decision was taken by the International Cricket Council authorities around 4.15 pm AEDT after the rain washed out the possibility to play the minimum 10-over match necessary to decide the winner.

Since India finished on the top of the group, they have progressed to the final in case of no result.

India started their campaign with a win against the defending champions Australia in the tournament opener.

The team then went on to win against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, sealing their place for the semi-finals.

Leg-spinner Poonam Yadav and 16-year-old batswoman Shafali Verma have been touted as stars of this tournament with Yadav picking up nine wickets in four games and Verma scoring 161 runs in four games.

ICC T20 Women’s World Cup final on International Women’s Day:

The T20 World Cup final will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, March 8, 2020, which is also the International Women’s Day.

ICC hopes to fill up the entire stadium that boasts of capacity to sit over 100,000 and set a new record for attendance at a women’s sporting event ever. The current record is 90,185 set by FIFA Women’s World Cup final between USA and China in California in 1999.

The final is scheduled to begin at 6 pm AEDT on Sunday.
