An Indian international student has been disqualified from driving after he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a car, Geelong Advertiser reports.
24-year-old Ayush Jain fell asleep while driving and crashed into an oncoming car at Mt Duneed on October 22nd last year.
His veered onto the wrong side of the road, crashed into another car and injured two people in the car.
Jain’s co-passenger had to be treated too.
On Wednesday, he was disqualified from driving for six months in Geelong Magistrates’ Court.
Two eye-witnesses told the court they saw Jain’s car crossing over the centre line several times before the crash.
Jain was apologetic and said, “It was totally my mistake. I promise it won’t happen again.” Jain pleaded with the magistrate to ‘give him a chance’.
But Magistrate Michael Coghlan said he was surprised police were not pursuing more serious charges.
“If this was in India, I’d probably be sending you to jail,” the magistrate was quoted as saying in the report.
Mr Coghlan disqualified Jain from driving for six months and fined Jain $1000.
