Australian cricket’s next big thing, Arjun Nair, the Canberra-born son of Indian immigrants has signed up with Sydney Thunder for the 2016-17 Big Bash League.
Nair who has taken the junior cricket ranks of NSW by storm coupled with an impressive one-day cup has helped him secure a contract with the Sydney Thunder, the current BBL champions.
The 18-year-old was one of the standouts for the winless Cricket Australia XI, bagging 11 wickets at 22.7.
He has also shown he's handy with the bat, hitting 67 at the top of the order against a Victorian attack boasting experienced bowlers Michael Beer, Jon Holland, Fawad Ahmed and Dan Christian.
Nair has signed a full professional contract after being a development rookie when the club won their first BBL title last season. Nair is an off-spinner and is also known to be good with the bat.
“I’m really excited to be able to come back this year, hopefully I can get an opportunity and perform well.
“To play in the Big Bash is my number one goal. I want to keep improving and strive for it,” he was quoted as saying.
Australian cricketer and Director of Cricket Michael Hussey has been all praises for the young lad. Hussey said, “Arjun is a gifted young bowler who impressed during his time as a rookie last season. He’s a modern day spinner whose variations are perfectly suited to T20 cricket.”
The Australian under-19s representative made his Sheffield Shield debut for NSW in February.
Nair has become well-known among cricket fans since Cricket Australia national talent manager Greg Chappell declared he was one of Australia’s future stars.
