An Indian-origin man and woman were caught on US-Canada border carrying nearly 100-kg cocaine in a truck on December 2nd.
31-year-old Gurminder Singh Toor and 26-year-old Kirandeep Kaur Toor from California, US were stopped at the Coutts border while going to Alberta, Canada.
Border officers searched the truck they were travelling in and found 84 bricks of cocaine weighing 99.5 kgs, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a release.
"Officers opened a microwave and found eight bricks of suspected narcotics, a drawer beneath the microwave and the area behind the microwave revealed another 14 bricks - officers then recovered 18 bricks, wedged between the end of the bed and the wall of the truck."
"When they lifted the top bunk mattress, they found another 44 bricks - 84 in total."
The Canada Border Services Agency says it sets the agency’s record for largest suspected cocaine seizure in Alberta.
"Had this quantity of illicit narcotics made its way into our communities undetected, the impact could have been devastating," CBSA regional director general Kim R Scoville was quoted as saying by CBC News.
The two were charged with two counts each of importing drugs, and drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.
The two accused appeared in provincial court on Friday. The couple was released from custody on each posting USD 10,000 cash bail.
They were also ordered not to leave Alberta, to provide authorities with any travel documents, report weekly and in person to the RCMP, live at a specific address in northwest Edmonton, and not possess any weapons or explosives.
Their next court hearing is scheduled for January 19.
