Indian-origin girl wins SBS National Languages Competition 2017

Daughter of an Indian father and Swedish mother, Anjali D’Cunha has won the SBS National Languages Competition.

Daughter of an Indian father and Swedish mother, Anjali D’Cunha won the SBS National Languages Competition 2017 in Secondary Primary Category (aged 13-15) on Monday.

Anjali’s entry was in Swedish, her mother tongue.

An excited Anjali told SBS Hindi, “I am very happy. I want everybody to speak their own language.”

Anjali’s father is from India and speaks Hindi too. He says, “We should teach our children Hindi too. I guess that would be our next target.”

Anjali has visited India on several occasions and loves the food and the culture.

She wants to speak Hindi too. She says, “I love traveling and I would love to learn a lot of languages.”

Anjali’s entry was appreciated a lot and was received with applause and laughter, when played on screen during the award ceremony.

Students nationwide, aged 4 to 18 years entered the SBS National Languages Competition which aims to encourage and celebrate a love of learning languages in Australia.

SBS today announced four national winners across four age categories.
