Radio New Zealand reports that three Indian-origin men based out of Australia and New Zealand targeted migrant workers, lured them with fake jobs in New Zealand and scammed them.
Some of these migrant workers, scammed by these men have spoken to Radio New Zealand about how they were charged thousands of dollars in return of a promised job in New Zealand which never materialised.
RNZ has quoted Pithani Durgaprasad who is a 32-year-old pipe fitter originally from Vishakhapatam in India.
He told the RNZ journalist that he paid $4600 last year for a job which he never got. "That is why ... my dream, all, everything collapsed now," Mr Dugraprasad said.
The report also quotes another welder who remains anonymous and claims that he paid $2500 for a job promised in New Zealand.
"In return I didn't get anything. He just gave me the receipt and then he went back to New Zealand and after six months or eight months he didn't contact us,” he says.
These three men who have allegedly duped these Indian migrant workers have been named as Srinivas Naidu Reddy Chamakuri, Anthony Reddy and Ravi Naga Vara Prasad in the report.
While Srinivas Chamkuri lives in Sydney, Mr Reddy and Mr Prasad live in New Zealand.
Complaints have been registered against them in India and Immigration New Zealand has also probed them. However, there isn’t enough evidence to take action against them.
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) issued a statement to RNZ where they say they had fully investigated all the complaints involving the individuals, but the information provided did not meet the evidence threshold needed to take a prosecution.
