According to police officials in the San Fransisco Bay Area city of Fremont, the teenager - identified as Nathaniel Prasad - was shot dead after he opened fire on police on 5th April.

The 18-year-old had been wanted on a "felony probation warrant and a misdemeanor evading arrest for fleeing from a Freemont School Resource Officer on 22nd March".
According to the police report, Prasad fled on foot after two patrol officers stopped the the car Prasad was in.   He was followed to a nearby petrol station where, police claim, he pulled out a firearm from his waist area.

"It appears that he fired one to two shots in the direction of the officer," the police statement said. "The officer drew his duty weapon, returned fire and broadcast over the police radio that the suspect had a gun.  Prasad ran back toward Fremont Blvd.   This interaction was captured on video surveillance and was corroborated by statements of the involved officer and witnesses at the scene."
Nathaniel Prasad's family and friends kept a vigil for him after he was shot and disputed the version of events given by the police according to East Bay Times . The newspaper reported that they didn't believe that Prasad pointed a gun at the police officers after running from a traffic stop as the police claimed.

However, an investigation report released by the Freemont Police Department said the incident was captured by body-worn camera footage and that Prasad had a .22 calibre gun which had allegedly been stolen.

The police officers involved have been put on paid leave as an investigation gets under way.
