People on Twitter have called out Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ‘mocking dyslexia’ and making fun of those who suffer from it while taking a jibe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday.

The incident occurred during a live interactive video conference at the Smart India Hackathon 2019 where a student from Dehradun, Uttarakhand told the Prime Minister about a program that could help dyslexic children.

The student was explaining her idea about helping dyslexic children, whose pace of learning and writing is slow when she was interrupted by the Prime Minister.

“We have an idea to help dyslexic children, whose pace of learning and writing is very slow. But they have a high intelligence and creativity level as you have seen in the movie Taare Zameen Par..." she said before being interrupted.

“Will this program work for a 40-50-year-old child too?” PM Modi said, attempting a jibe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

The crowd broke into laughter and the student replied, “Yes sir, it will work.”

To which he said, “Then that will make the mothers of such children very happy” to another round of laughter.
The exchange was heavily criticized on social media after the video went viral, with many terming it as ‘insensitive’ and ‘crude joke’.
