A young Indian mother has died during childbirth while attempting home birth based on YouTube videos.

28-year-old K Krithiga, from Tamil Nadu, in India’s South, died while delivering a child at home on Sunday.

The newborn survived but the mother bled to death, the state authorities have said.

"The woman lost a lot of blood during the delivery and went into a physiological shock. That is why she collapsed and died,'' said k. Boopathy, the chief health officer in Tiruppur.

The officers said the woman and her husband Karthikeyan were reportedly convinced by their friends Praveen and his wife Lavanya to opt for a home birth.

Krithiga, who worked as a school teacher and her husband who was employed at a local knitwear agency have a three-year-old girl.

The couple is believed to have seen home birth videos on YouTube before the delivery.

The Times of India reported that during the childbirth the placenta did not come out.

A case has been registered against the husband and the couple friend.

“India’s maternal mortality rate down by 22%”

Maternal mortality is a huge public health issue in India with causes ranging from excessive blood loss (post-partum haemorrhage) to infections, primarily because women do not give birth in a hospital or health centre.

In last five years, India has worked towards reducing the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and has registered a significant decline, recording a 22% reduction in such deaths since 2013, according to the Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletin released by the office of Registrar General of India on June 7th 2018.

The MMR has declined from 167 in 2011-2013 to 130 in 2014-2016, according to the special bulletin.
According to the SRS Bulletin, there were nearly 12,000 fewer maternal deaths in 2016 as compared to 2013, with the total number of maternal deaths for the first time reducing to 32,000, according to a Health Ministry statement.
