  • Mumbai Police had said Sushant Rajput killed himself.

After a massive online campaign demanding 'Justice for Sushant' and speculation surrounding the actor's death, India's Supreme Court on Wednesday directed CBI to investigate the case.

Sushant Singh's sister Shweta Singh Kirti expressed happiness over Supreme Court's decision calling it the first step towards victory and unbiased investigation.

"Thank you, God! You have answered our prayers!! But it is just the beginning. The first step towards the truth! Full faith on CBI!" tweeted Ms Kirti.

Many in the Bollywood fraternity have applauded the apex court's decision.

Actor Kangana Ranaut termed the decision as a victory for humanity.

"Humanity wins, congratulations to each one of SSR warriors, the first time I felt such strong force of collective consciousness," said Ms Ranaut.

"Huge Congratulations to all of you. The Honb'le Supreme Court has given the verdict in favour of a CBI enquiry. Rejoice," tweeted actor Shekhar Suman.

Why was the investigation handed over to CBI?

The actor's death was being investigated by Mumbai police after some Bollywood actors alleged that the late star was bullied by some filmmakers and actors.

Sushant's father, KK Singh filed a case in his home state, Bihar (in Eastern India) accusing Sushant's girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and her family of cheating his son financially and mentally.

Acting upon the complaint, the Bihar government ordered a CBI investigation.

Actor, model and Sushant's girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty appealed to the Supreme Court to transfer the case registered in Bihar to Mumbai.

However, on Wednesday, the Supreme court ruled the case registered in Bihar was correct and handed over the probe to CBI.
