Saba Nabi won the prestigious NSW International Student of the Year Award in 2014.
She is currently pursuing PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the Charles Sturt University and is based in Wagga Wagga in NSW.
An all-rounder, Saba juggles various roles as an international student pursuing PhD in Australia, mother to a toddler, Board member at Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, is a volunteer for Wagga Wagga City Council, Cancer Council and is also a member of Wagga Wagga sustainability group.
She has been actively involved in working with the Australian authorities to ensure welfare and safety of international students and local migrant communities.
Saba arrived in Australia to pursue her higher studies and today shares her top five tips to make the most of your time in Australia as an International Student.
- Australia is multicultural. People and students belong to different cultures, countries and speak different languages. Make the most of this exposure.
- World class universities: Your University is a pool of resources – high tech classrooms, great collection of journals and books in libraries, sports ground, extra-curricular events and activities. Try to participate as much as you can.
- Quality of life is great: Explore your local area and city. There are various events and festivals celebrated among your local community. Become a part of it. You will feel at home.
- Embrace the vast options of educating yourself: The education system here provides the freedom to pursue your interests and gain knowledge. Be it learning a new language, picking up new skills, combining varied interests.
- Don’t shy away from approaching your University departments: The University staff is here to help you. Do not shy away from asking questions and getting your queries solved.
