A jury in the trial of two lovers who allegedly murdered a Melbourne husband in his sleep has retired to consider its verdict, AAP reports.
Sofia Sam and Arun Kamalasanan are on trial in the Victorian Supreme Court, charged with murdering her husband, Sam Abraham, at their home in Epping, Melbourne in October 2015.
It was initially believed Mr Abraham had suffered a heart attack, but an autopsy revealed he died of cyanide poisoning and also had a sedative in his system.
The Crown has alleged Mr Kamalasanan sneaked into Ms Sam’s house in the Melbourne suburb of Epping on the night of the murder and slipped sleeping pills into Mr Abraham’s avocado smoothie.

Prosecutor Kerri Judd QC told the court Mr Kamalasanan later added potassium cyanide powder to orange juice and poured it down Mr Abraham’s throat as he slept.
She told the jury it was impossible for Ms Sam to have no knowledge of the poisoning, as she was asleep beside her husband with their son, 6.
During the trial, Mr Kamalasanan’s conversations with an undercover cop were recorded and played in the court where he allegedly shared a detailed sketch of his victim’s home showing where he hid before he allegedly poisoned Sam in his house.

The court has heard that Sam and Kamalasanan knew each other from their college days in India and they were allegedly having an affair at the time of the murder.
The jury was told they reconnected after they both moved to Melbourne and were meeting in secret.
Secret love diaries where they professed their love for each other were displayed on the court screens during the trial.
Both Sam and Kamalasanan have pleaded not guilty.

While Sam has denied her involvement in the murder, Kamalasanan’s lawyer, Patrick Tehan QC, told the court his client was an isolated man with financial problems in a new country and one bragged about himself by making up a story that he had poisoned his lover’s husband.
“He’s like a lonely kid in a playground that tells to others his father’s an astronaut in order to be accepted,” he said according to Fairfax.
The jury is deliberating now and will soon return a verdict.
