Keeping the spirit alive in the lockdown, UNSW celebrates virtual Gandhi Jayanti

The 151th birth anniversary was commemorated at UNSW to honour Gandhi’s legacy. Due to the current social distancing policies this commemoration was done virtually this year.

Globally, Gandhi's birthday is celebrated as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi’s philosophy of education, non-violence, tolerance and respect for all religions has influenced the world and it acquires new dimensions in these uncertain and weary pandemic conditions.

UNSW has been commemorating various events celebrating Gandhi’s philosophy especially on January 30th and October 2nd. On January 30th, the university organizes an Annual Gandhi oration and is the only International University in the world to do so.

Gandhi was a staunch believer that education should aim for an all-round development of body, mind and spirit. The message delivered by Gandhi throughout his life still finds significant resonance in the 21st century.

Consulate General of India, Manish Gupta inaugurated the event which was kicked off by Laurie Pearcy in which she ventilated the significance of “Gandhi ji’s philosophy on Education” for the students.

Insights about Gandhi’s philosophy were also contributed from four other esteemed panellists including Tracy Wilcox, Professor Ganga Prusty and alum students Kinjal Makwana, Kuthsav Thattai.

Tracy Wilcox expounded a powerful argument on how Gandhi’s life and teachings have influenced her way of teaching business to the students. She stated that, “by giving skills and the confidence to be an agent of positive change, we are educating future leaders”.

Mr. Amit Dasgupta, former Indian diplomat and strategic advisor India Engagement moderated the panel. He said that, “This celebration reflects UNSW’s art of thinking sideways, of innovation, of realising collective aspirations and dreams and honouring those walked the earth and made a difference”.
