Vienna has retained its top spot as the world’s most liveable city for the second year in a row in Global Liveability Index 2019 released by Economist Intelligence Unit.
Vienna once again beat Melbourne which held the title of the most liveable city in the world for seven consecutive years until it lost it to Vienna in 2018.
Melbourne came in a close second followed by Sydney at the number three spot and Adelaide took the tenth spot.

Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide) and Canada (Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto) dominate the top 10 list with three cities each while Osaka, Tokyo in Japan and Copenhagen in Denmark complete the list.
“The upsides of these cities tend to be fully realized. You get a good collection of cultural activities, you get good access to healthcare and education,” said EIU’s regional director for Asia, Duncan Innes-Ker.
“But you don’t get a lot of downsides that tend to come with big cities, things like traffic congestion, crime problems and general wear and tear.”
Sydney becomes 'more liveable'
'Sydney has risen from fifth to third, thanks to an improvement in its culture and environment score, reflecting an increased focus on combating and mitigating the impacts of climate change, as outlined by the city’s “Sustainable Sydney 2030” strategy,' the Global Liveability Index 2019 report said.
The Global Liveability Index assesses which locations around the world provide the best or the worst living conditions.
Of 140 cities worldwide, each city is assigned a score for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories of Stability, Healthcare, Culture and Environment, Education and Infrastructure.
