A “mentally challenged” youth desecrated a Hindu temple in Jammu on Wednesday.
This has created tension and sparked violent protests in the region.
To prevent any serious threat the authorities have suspended Internet services in the Jammu city.
It was reported that several vehicles were set afire by protesters in Jammu.
The "mentally unstable" youth belonging to Muslim community barged into the temple at Janipur.
The CCTV footage shows that he threw stones at windowpanes and tried to damage the shiva idol and shivling.
In the state assembly, BJP MLAs demanded a statement from the government.
“A mentally disturbed person, identified as Yasir of Doda, tried to damage and defile a temple at Janipur. He was arrested. However, the priest and a few locals tried to prevent the police from discharging their duties,” Law Minister Abdul Haq Khan said in the House.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti rushed to Jammu “to monitor the situation.”
“Jammu [and Kashmir] is the most secular place and I don’t want it to be hijacked by extremist forces,” Mehbooba said while addressing a function at Jammu University on June 15.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed concern over the situation.
The MLAs across party line have urged the government “to ensure the safety of Kashmiris staying in the Jammu region.”
