Movie Review: Bhoomi

If you are a 90s child who has loved Gumrah, Daud, Dhalnayak or Kartoos for its action and Sanjay Dutt’s walk, talk and larger than life persona on screen, then GO and watch this flick to feel the same adrenaline running after a long wait.

Bhoomi –  the lost ground!!

Star cast – Sanjay Dutt, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shekhar Suman, Sharad Kelkar

Director – Omung Kumar

Ratings – 2.5 /5

Much like the other comebacks of the year, Sanjay Dutt’s ‘Bhoomi’ also turned out to be a revenge-story. We have seen ‘Mom’ and ‘Maatr’ advocating feminism in their own styles and ‘Bhoomi’ follows the same path staying easy in the Bollywood masala zone.

The good news is that Sanjay Dutt delivers just like we hoped before we enter the hall. He is deep, intense and plays a role appropriate to the age.

Directed by Omung Kumar, ‘Bhoomi’ is a predictable film. Considering the films he has given us like Mary Kom and Sarabjit, we wanted some substantial base that is missing.

‘Bhoomi’ is the story of a father-daughter duo (Sanjay Dutt’s Arun and ‘Bhoomi’ played by Aditi Rao Hydari) who are living a simple principled life till destiny decides to take another course. Presenting the man who has been in the limelight ever since he voiced Bahubali, Sharad Kelkar comes in as the antagonist with 80s type outlook. Aditi does justice to her ‘cliched’ role and switches from a sweet, vulnerable girl to a strong woman finding herself after the ‘damage’ to her life.

The first half of the film is about premise setting and we can already guess the second half. And yes, it happens so. The cops creating trouble, lame public prosecutor and discussing rape statistics, the court room drama puts you off after a while.

But…but…but…we have Sanjay Dutt. You see him deliver his dialogues like a champion who has aged and there is so much for him to still show. A movie with a stronger line of thought could have been a better comeback. One thing is true, Sanju baba has a lot left to give and we hope lot better!
