People in Mumbai spend a whopping 65 per cent extra travel time stuck in traffic, a new report has revealed.
Mumbai is the most traffic congested city in the world according to the TomTom Traffic Index.
New Delhi wasn’t far behind on the list, with being the fourth most traffic-congested in the world, where commuters spend an extra 58 per cent travel time stuck in traffic.
Lack of parking, encroachments and construction is often the most common reason leading to traffic congestion in India.

India-based think tank IDFC Institute’s latest research revealed similar findings where an average 30-minute drive in Mumbai more than doubles to 66 minutes, according to the analysis of more than 53 million Uber Movement data points.
Commuters in Mumbai waste 55 per cent of their time stuck in traffic, equating to roughly 11 days in traffic for the average person, assuming a 30-minute commute.
It gets worse during the monsoon season when a 30-minute journey becomes 70 minutes.
In Australia and Oceania, Sydney took the top spot where commuters spend 34 per cent extra travel time and Melbourne ranked third with drivers wasting an extra 29 per cent time stuck in traffic, according to the TomTom Traffic Index.

Ralf-Peter Schaefer, TomTom’s VP of Traffic information, said: “Globally, traffic congestion is rising. And that’s both good, and bad, news. It’s good because it indicates a strong global economy, but the flip side is drivers wasting time sitting in traffic, not to mention the huge environmental impact.”
“At TomTom, we’re working towards a future where vehicles are electric, shared and autonomous so that our future really is free of congestion and emissions. We have the technology to make this future happen – but it takes a collaborative effort. From road authorities to governments; car makers to car drivers, we all have a part to play.”
