Nine Indians missing in Christchurch shooting

New Zealand is on a high alert after the massacre at two mosques in Christchurch left 49 dead and dozens more injured in the country's worst shooting and terror attack.

At least nine people of Indian nationality or Indian origin are missing after Friday’s shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand that left 49 people dead, Indian High Commissioner in New Zealand  Sanjiv Kohli said.

“As per updates received from multiple sources, there are 9 missing persons of indian nationality/origin. Official confirmation still awaited. Huge crime against humanity. Our prayers with their families,” Kohli tweeted.
“My deep gratitude to members of the community in Christchurch who are working through the night to get updates for us on the victims of today’s dastardly attack. Cant be a better example than this of dedication and solidarity,” Mr Kohli wrote.

While three people who remain in custody have not yet been named by police, former NSW personal trainer Brenton Tarrant identified himself online as behind the shooting that began as hundreds of worshippers gathered for prayers on Friday.

A 28-year-old man charged with murder has faced court.

None of those arrested had appeared on watchlist of New Zealand or Australian security agencies, police said.

The Indian High Commission in New Zealand said any Indian caught up in the Christchurch mosque massacre and needing assistance could contact it.

“We are shocked to hear about the shooting in Christchurch. Any Indians needing assistance should contact us at 021803899 or 021850033,” India's Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj tweeted.
