Franchesca Kororia Borell has been found guilty of murdering her partner in Christchurch. Twenty-six-year-old Hardeep Singh was killed on December 25, 2016. Borell had denied killing her partner intentionally.
Twenty-four-year-old Borell had admitted throwing a knife at her partner but claimed she did not mean to kill Hardeep.
However, the Crown presented evidence that Singh died from a stab wound. A jury sided with the Crown after a trial at the High Court in Christchurch.
Some of the family members of Hardeep travelled from India to be in court on the day of the decision. However, his parents could not make it to New Zealand.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Ownes said he hopes this result provided some closure to Hardeep's family.
"We would like to acknowledge the impact this investigation has had and will continue to have on them, particularly on Hardeep’s parents who were unable to make it today," said Detective Sergeant Ownes said in a statement.
"Hardeep’s family have requested privacy at this time, but wish to thank those involved in bringing some closure and justice for Hardeep," he added.
He also thanked the Christchurch Indian community for assisting the police with this case.
Some of the community members have expressed a relief after the court's decision. "Hardeep cannot be replaced, however, it provides some closure to the family," said Pankaj Bangarh, a community member following the case closely.
