An advertisement placed by a private contractor on free classifieds website, Gumtree read: Cleaner Wanted.
The description read: ‘Cleaning of cinemas in Maroochydore event cinemas, 12 cinemas, seven days a week, pay is $900, prefer Indian or Asian."
This Gumtree job advert requesting ‘India or Asian’ people for a cleaning position in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast came under severe criticism from public.
A contractor, whose name is not known, advertised for cleaner to clean Event Cinemas in Sunshine Coast specifically mentioning his preference for an ‘Indian or Asian’ for the cleaning position which required ‘no previous experience’.
He has now been sacked by the cinema management for posting a ‘racist’ advertisement on Gumtree, Sunshine Coast Daily wrote.
One person identified as Ken, from the cinema management told the local paper, “You really cannot put that sort of ad in, it's discrimination. I sacked him over that. It is racist discrimination ... he put that in without thinking.”
It was reported that the Cinemas management received several complaints and comments on their Facebook Page by social media users. Following the outrage, the contractor was sacked.
The advertisement too has been taken off gumtree.
