Australian citizens travelling to India have been issued a safety alert by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) on August 25th following widespread violence after the conviction of the leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a rape case in India.
Smartraveller.gov.au on its website posted, "On 25 August 2017, incidents of violence were reported in parts of the states of Haryana (particularly in Sirsa and Panchkula), and Punjab, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, following the conviction of the leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda spiritual organisation, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
"High alerts and a ban on unauthorised gatherings are in place in these areas until 30 August 2017.
"Avoid large gatherings as they could become violent. Follow the advice of local authorities.
"Local transport has been significantly disrupted with a number of roads closed and rail services cancelled.
"Mobile internet services in Chandigarh have been suspended.
"Monitor the media for developments that may affect your safety and security. The level of our advice has not changed. Exercise a high degree of caution in India overall."
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh followers went on a violent rampage after the ruling in Panchkula and 38 people have been killed.
The army has been put on standby and police say they have been given "shoot on sight" orders in case of trouble.

50-year-old Singh will not be taken to court to hear his sentence on Monday. The judge who convicted him has been flown to Rohtak jail where he is being held, to deliver it. The verdict is expected at 14:30 hours IST.
