Some Indian students in Milan told a TV news channel that they were victims of attacks in the northern Italian city. One of them claimed that he was punched in face and told to go home. More than one such incident has been reported by Indian students on different days.
Indian consulate in Milan said it had taken up the “unfortunate incident of attacks on the Indian students” with the “highest level of law and order authorities” in the city.
The consulate advised the students to report all such attacks and to be in touch with each other. Consulate in a tweet said that there was no racist angle. It tweeted, “Brave Indian student who suffered the traumatic attack came to report the matter. Students maintain no racist angle in the incident.”
In a tweet, Sushma Swaraj told the students not to worry. She said, “Attack on Indian students in Milan : I have got the detailed report. Pls do not worry. I am monitoring the situation personally.”
Almost 180,000 Indians live in Italy. It is the third largest Indian community in Europe after the UK and the Netherlands. News of the attacks coincided with the Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni’s visit to India during October 29-30.
