A 26-year-old Australian national has died in a road accident in India.

Sydney resident Ridley Mathew Antony was riding a bike on the Yamuna Expressway towards Agra when a public transport bus skidded off the road and collided with his bike around 8am on Thursday morning, Hindustan Times reports.

The police said an Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus was on its way to Agra when due to poor visibility because of fog, rammed into a truck.

This bus skidded off the road and crushed a motorcycle.

Mr Antony was riding this motorcycle.

The police said Antony and his two friends had arrived three days ago from Sydney and were on their way to Agra on their bikes.

His friends who were right behind him, had a narrow escape.

Police said Antony was rushed to Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The roadways bus was also hit by a school bus, in which one girl received minor injuries, said police.

Three others including the bus driver, conductor and a passenger were injured, police added.

“We have registered a case against the bus driver of UP roadways for driving rashly and causing death due to negligence,” Farmood Ali Pundir, station house officer, Dankaur police station was quoted saying by The Indian Express.

"The Australian had sustained severe injuries on his chest and stomach. His body has been sent to the mortuary for a post-mortem, which will be conducted on Friday. The driver also sustained severe injuries and is recuperating at a private hospital. The others are out of danger,” Pundir said.

A Report on Road Accidents in India 2016, published by Transport Research wing under Indian government’s Ministry of Road Transport & Highways revealed the country recorded at least 4,80,652 accidents in 2016, leading to 1,50,785 deaths.
