A group of militants stormed a university in volatile northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday using the cover of thick fog, police said, with firing inside the campus still going on and two explosions heard.
Media reported that a chemistry professor had been killed and 50 people wounded in the attack. There are no confirmed number of casualties as yet.
The militants entered the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda, northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, early on Wednesday before opening fire on students and teachers in classrooms and hostels, two police officials said.
Reports also claim that there have been at least six explosions inside the University. It cannot be confirmed if the explosions were carried out by the terrorists or as a counter-operation by security officials.
The Express Tribune reports that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have claimed responsibility for the attack.
Meanwhile, The Dawn is reporting that at least 15 people have been killed, four of whom are security guards.
In his first reaction to the attack Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said “sacrifices made will not go in vain.” “Those who kill innocent students and civilians have no religion,” Sharif said.
