What does one do when you want to advance your career?
“Those who want to progress in their career, take on new job responsibilities, lead a team, head special projects or want to take up a higher job position, need to make 2019 the year of learning,” career expert Naishad Gadani says.
Over forty-five professionals gathered to learn and discuss ways to make the best of their career in 2019 in Melbourne on Wednesday evening.

Organised by Indian Professionals in Victoria (IPV), the outfit formed especially to help Indian migrant professionals, the event discussed ways and methods to advance in one’s career this year.
“Learning is the key factor,” Mr Gadani says.
“Life-long learning is a key tool when one is looking to advance their career. We need to identify our short-comings and make a deliberate effort to achieve new skills to fill that gap,” he says.
Mr Gadani cites soft skills like communication skills, presentation skills and business writing skills as some of the most important skills to acquire for those looking to climb up the ladder in 2019.
“Many with thorough technical skills and good work experience lack certain soft skills.
"Employers are keen to hire people with good communication, presentation skills. After all, to lead a team or head a project or to manage people, one must know how to precisely get across a point, speak to a large group and present your ideas and thoughts effectively,” Mr Gadani told SBS Hindi.
He recommends taking up an online course, or a short-term course or a volunteering opportunity to acquire these skills to include it in your resume.

"Learning opens up your thoughts. New thoughts lead to renewed creativity, ideas and problem-solving. It also makes for a good impression when you are networking," he adds.
