This Indian grows over 30 kg rice on the roof

This roof top farmer is surprising people around the world. A college employee in Mangaluru in the southern state of Karnatka in India is growing Paddy on hi terrace. And the production is over 30 kg.

Krishnappa Gowda Paddambail is cultivating paddy on the roof of his home in Maroli area. He is doing it for last five years but does not sell his produce. He uses 200 grow bags that yield 30 kg – 50 kg of paddy.

It started in 2014 with ten bags. An employee of Government college of Teacher Education in Mangaluru, Paddambail used home-made manure. Crop was so good that every years the number of grow bags kept increasing.

His cultivation methods are not traditional. He uses minimal water. Coconut husk is turned into hanging planters. He mixes soil with sand and cow dung and fills the bags. Then he hangs them around the house.

He also grows some vegetables, fruits and turmeric in the same bag during the off season. Paddambail says that he got eight kilos of turmeric last year.

Paddambail says that he does not sell his produce but distributes it among friends and relatives.
