A 7th-grade student is on life support in the United States after being hit by a car in Sunnyvale, northern California.

Dhriti Narayan was crossing a road on April 23 with her father and nine-year-old brother when a car hit the family and others.

The incident that left 7 people injured is suspected to be a case of hate crime, according to local police.

Activist and lawyer Jo Kaur tweeted, "13-year-old Dhriti was walking home from the library with her dad and brother a few days ago. In Sunnyvale, CA. Guess where she is now? Fighting for her life in critical care after an Islamophobic bigot - an Iraq veteran - ran her and others over bc he thought they were Muslims."

Accused 34-year-old Isaiah Peoples has been arrested and charged with 8 counts of attempted murder for allegedly driving his vehicle into pedestrians, according to the CNN.

People's lawyer Mr Chuck Smith told reports this was not an intentional act and is a case of mental disorder. He said Peoples is praying for the victims.

An appeal on a crowdfunding page, set up by the 'friends of Dhriti's family', says Dhriti is a sweet little girl who is kind to everyone and always stole our hearts with her generosity.

"We, friends of Dhriti's family, who were touched by her and her family's caring and helpful nature, are actively working with family members and other friends along with appropriate organizations and organizing this fundraising campaign to support the family at this difficult time. The beneficiaries of this campaign will be Dhriti's father 'Rajesh Narayan' and her mother," the appeal to donate money reads.

More than 12 thousand people have donated over USD 600k in 9 days.

Peoples will appear in court on 16 May 2019.
