A car has crashed into a tram late on Monday night, forcing it off the tracks and through the front of a Melbourne house.

The e-tram crashed into a home in Kew but luckily the occupant of the house was not injured.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade has relocated the residents fearing collapse while emergency crews assess the damage.

The woman driver sustained minor injuries while she was trapped inside the car after the crash. She was freed and taken to hospital.

No one on the tram was injured and a Yarra Trams spokesman says services haven't been affected.

Commander Bob Lanigan from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade told ABC news that the house's single occupant had been in bed and was lucky to escape injury.

"He was awoken by some loud bangs and heard something coming through his front yard," he said.

"It actually impacted his bedroom but he's OK, just a bit shaken as you'd imagine."

The tram ran over a gas meter and came to rest touching overhead wires, with crews shutting off gas and electricity supplies as they worked to remove the tram from the scene.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
