A lioness ventured out of the forest and onto streets in India in broad daylight leaving residents shocked.

Residents of Virpur-Gadhia village in Amreli district of Gujarat in India left their work midway and went into hiding as lioness devoured a dead cow as her food.

Footage soon emerged where onlookers can be heard screaming.

The ferocious lion only stops eating when a truck tries to prompt her to move by driving slowly behind her.
The tense situation ended when lioness decided to go back into the forest.

But villagers have revealed that wasn't the end of the incident.  She returned later after night fell at around 7pm to finish off the leftovers from her meal.

The village of Virpur-Gadhia is located around 6 miles from the nearby Gir Wildlife Sanctuary where the lioness is believed to have come from.

They are often spotted in the outskirts in the forests, but they rarely make their way into populated areas.

Villagers said they informed the forest department about the incident.

Deputy divisional forest officers worked to capture the lioness safely, without using tranquilisers to release her back into the forest, adding that she has "never attacked a human to date" and is used to seeing them.
