A newly employed 40-year-old zoo worker in Bengaluru was mauled to death by two white tiger cubs at Bannerghatta Biological Park on Saturday night, The Times of India reports.

The News Minute identified him as Anjaneya aka Anji, who was assigned to feed the cubs as one of the assistants was on leave.

Anji entered the cage without realising the gate connecting the feeding area to the wider safari was not locked.

He tried to escape but two 18-month-old white tigers attacked him and dragged him into the safari area, where he died at the scene.

The incident occurred about 5:30 pm (local time) on Saturday.

Anji was hired as a caretaker at the park one week ago.

Santosh Kumar, Executive Director of the park, told TNM, “We are probing why a new employee was allowed inside. The Zoo Authority of Karnataka is also going to review the safety of tigers and the staffers. Hucche Gowda (senior employee) was the only one who saw what happened. Action will be taken if there was negligence on anyone’s behalf.”

The safari at the Bannerghatta Biological Park is home to 26 normal tigers and seven rare white tigers, the park's website said.
