Mission Mangal is loosely based on the events at India’s space agency – Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which successfully launched a mission to Mars in 2013.
The film stars Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sharman Joshi, Tapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles and is directed by Jagan Shakti.
The film’s plot revolves around how the scientists (mostly women scientists) at ISRO work towards successfully launching a satellite mission to Mars.
The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) also called Mangalyaan (Mars craft in Sanskrit), is a space probe orbiting Mars since September 24, 2014. It was launched by ISRO in November 2013 making India the fourth country to reach Mars and the first nation in the world to do so in its maiden attempt.
