A young Indian man who worked at Auckland International Airport has died after his condition deteriorated in a span of a week after falling ill on May 24th in Auckland, New Zealand.
26-year-old Akhilesh Kadam fell ill and developed a respiratory problem and was taken to Auckland City Hospital by the emergency services on May 24th.
He was admitted in the Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit at the hospital where he was given mechanical life support.
“Akhilesh developed a major respiratory problem which required emergency intervention and mechanical life support and intensive care treatment,” said his colleague, Carlos Delgado, who started a fundraising campaign to help with his treatment costs.
The community came forward and donated over $14,500 but his condition deteriorated further.
Akhilesh suffered multiple organ failure.
“His lungs, kidneys and heart were critical and being supported by machines. But he died on May 29th,” Mr Delgado told SBS Hindi.
“Our family is deeply saddened to inform you that Akhilesh passed away. We are relieved that his passing was peaceful and painless.
“Funds will be used to help cover funeral costs,” he said.

Akhilesh was 'very kind, always willing to help others'
Mr Delgado, who worked with Akhilesh at the Auckland International Airport, said he was ‘a very kind person, always willing to help others and a really smart guy.’
Akhilesh hailed from Mumbai, India and came to New Zealand as a student in 2017 to pursue a Level 8 course in Mechanical Engineering from Auckland University of Technology.
After completing his course, Akhilesh started working with Compass Group and was employed at the Auckland International Airport Office of the company.
Mr Delgado said Akhilesh’s father had arrived in Auckland and the High Commission of India had extended support to the family.
“Akhilesh's father has arrived today in Auckland and has been received by friends and his community.
“He is very grateful to everyone, however, he would like to remain anonymous during this time.
“Many thanks for all your prayers and thoughts,” Carlos said.
