The 2026 National Drowning Report recorded 313 drowning deaths in Australia, down from 357 the previous year, but still 10 per cent above the decade average.
- The new report, released by Royal Life Saving Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia, found that where country of birth was known, 39 per cent of those who drowned were born overseas.
- The lowest rates of drowning were children 5-14 years, but this rises sharply by ages 15-24 years. The highest drowning rates were in people aged 65-74-year age group.
- Swimming advocate Harpreet Kandra says people arriving in Australia should learn basic swimming skills or complete water-safety training.
