Australia has formally launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 term. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Australia’s bid in New York ahead of the UN General Debate, which began on 21 September 2026.

Nearly 130 heads of state and government will attend the week-long high-level talks, with AI, climate action and the "descalation" of international conflicts on the agenda.
Labor Senator of Western Australia, Varun Ghosh, said, "I think one of the best ways Australia engages internationally is in coalitions. It acts as a middle power, it builds cooperation, and so it tends not to act exclusively alone."
