Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has unveiled his first major policy proposal, outlining a tougher stance on migration with a focus on stricter screening, Australian values and stronger enforcement. We spoke to some politicians, as well as voters, to hear their views. Here’s what they had to say.

NSW Senator Dave Sharma (Liberal party)

"It’s about making sure that the people who come to this country (and we are blessed that a lot of people who come to this country) - more than we can accommodate, are equipped with the right skills and attributes to make a contribution, and are going to support our way of life.

The Coalition is doing this because we believe it is in Australia’s national interest."

Skills and Training Minister Andrew Giles (Labor party)

"I am very concerned that, at every turn, Angus Taylor seeks to divide Australians rather than bring them together.

I think many Australians, most Australians rather, understand that how much you love this country is not determined by how well you speak English; it’s about what’s in your heart and your commitment to making a contribution."

Voters from migrant communities

"We don’t yet have a clear picture of Angus Taylor’s migration policy, and how these proposals would be put into practice remains uncertain. In my view, migrant communities generally follow the rules, as they are mindful of meeting visa conditions," Aparna from Victoria.

"I remember that during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was migrants who stepped in to fill critical gaps in the healthcare and aged care sectors. As someone from a small business background, I strongly believe that migration is vital. In my view, migration is one of Australia’s greatest strengths," Subash Chetry from Queensland.

"Today, I contribute to building economic pathways in Australian society, and I believe migrants play a vital role in that contribution. Australian values are not something migrants need to learn after arriving, we bring those values with us. I am not just a migrant; I am part of Australia, and that is what makes the nation stronger," Asha Bhat from Western Australia.

"I don’t think this is the right time to focus on migration, given the current challenges like fuel shortages and inflation. But if the issue is being raised, it’s important to also address racism and recognise the contributions of migrants, otherwise, the migration policy is incomplete and flawed," Harpreet Kandra from Victoria.
