The Australian government has temporarily eased fuel quality standards for 60 days, allowing the use of higher-sulphur petrol to address acute shortages in regional areas. While authorities maintain that national fuel reserves remain stable, the move has sparked concern over distribution challenges and long-term energy security. Critics argue that Australia’s continued reliance on imported fuel and failure to meet international stockpile benchmarks leave it vulnerable to global disruptions, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in key oil supply routes.
