New programs, new school teachers and a new era for Hindi in Victoria

Victoria marked a development in language education as 18 trained Hindi and Punjabi teachers graduated from Monash University’s Languages Methodology Course. This podcast covers the introduction of Hindi in Victorian schools, the curriculum designed for students, and the professional pathways available for teachers through this program. It includes interviews with a Hindi teacher Sonali Pendurkar, perspectives from Monash University, including Professor Craig Jeffrey, and comments from Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll, outlining the cultural and educational context of the program for students, schools, and the wider community.

विक्टोरिया में छात्रों के लिए हिंदी और पंजाबी भाषाओं को school curriculum का हिस्सा बनाने की एक पहल सामने आई है। Labor सरकार के तहत 18 trained हिंदी और पंजाबी शिक्षक Victorian public schools में पढ़ाना शुरू कर रहे हैं। ये शिक्षक Monash University के एक साल के एक specialized methodology course के पहले graduates हैं, जिसे सरकार के scholarship support के साथ design किया गया है। इस पहल का मकसद ना सिर्फ language learning को बढ़ावा देना है, बल्कि छात्रों को अपनी संस्कृतिक जड़ों से जोड़ने के साथ-साथ उनकी literacy और communication skills को भी मजबूत बनाना है। SBS Hindi के लिए मैं हूं नबील हसन। विक्टोरिया में हुए इस पहल के graduation event में हमारी बात Alkira Secondary College की हिंदी और STEM teacher सोनाली पंडुरकर से हुई। हमने उनसे जाना कि भारतीय मूल के प्रवासी परिवारों की अगली पीढ़ी, जिसमें बच्चे यहीं बड़े हो रहे हैं, उनके लिए घर पर शायद हिंदी बोली जाती हो, लेकिन उनका पूरा माहौल English dominated होता है। ऐसे में ये curriculum कैसे design किया गया है?
इसमें मैं चाहूंगी दो तरह की problems हैं हमारे यहां। एक तो migrant community से आने वाले जो हिंदी बोल, जिनके घरों में हिंदी बोली जाती है पर बच्चे उतने fluent नहीं हैं। तो उनके लिए हम कोशिश करते हैं कि अम्म जो घरों में जिस तरह की simplified हिंदी बोली जाती है, वो हम curriculum में add करें। पर उसके साथ हमें ध्यान रखना पड़ता है कि हम उन्हें वर्णमाला जो देवनागरी लिपि है, वो भी सिखाएं। तो इसके लिए हम अ transliteration use करते हैं। जैसे शब्द अ हमारा एक व्यंजन है अ और आ। तो आ के लिए हम उन्हें double A सिखाते हैं और वो pronounce करने के लिए उन्हें मुंह से कैसे किया जाता है, ये बताते हैं। क्योंकि काफी बार क्या होता है कि ये बच्चे English और Hindi mix करते हैं। तो हमने सोचा ठीक है, यही हम अपने लिए use करेंगे। हम इन्हें English जिसे हम transliteration कहते हैं, उसका उपयोग करके पढ़ाते हैं। पर हमारे पास दूसरे बच्चे भी हैं जो अ Indian background से नहीं आते, जो maybe Chinese background और other non-Hindi speaking culture से आते हैं। तो उनके लिए भी हमें यही करते हैं कि हमें class में ये जो Hindi बोलने वाले बच्चे हैं, उनके साथ उन्हें pair up करते हैं so ताकि उन बच्चों को confidence आ सके। Plus ये validation है हमारे migrant बच्चों के लिए कि हां, मेरी Hindi इतनी भी बुरी नहीं है कि मैं बोलूं ही ना। मैं किसी और को बता सकता हूं, मैं किसी और को पढ़ा सकता हूं और मैं सही तरह से बोल रहा हूं। ये validation, ये confidence building बहुत जरूरी है। तो हम ये classroom में करते हैं plus classroom के बाहर। हमारी school Alkira Secondary College में काफी Indian teachers भी हैं। So हम उन बच्चों को encourage करते हैं कि वो जाकर वो Hindi teacher से भले ही वो Maths पढ़ाते हो, Science पढ़ाते हो, कोई भी other subject पढ़ाते हो, उनसे Hindi में बोलने की कोशिश करें, जिस तरह से उनका confidence बढ़ता है। तो curriculum तो एक part है पर दूसरा part है confidence building and we think these both are really interconnected है तो बहुत ज्यादा जरूरी है।
इस पहल के जरिए शिक्षकों के लिए कैसे नए अवसर खुले हैं?
बहुत ज्यादा। अम्म मैं खुद 20 सालों से ज्यादा मेरे पास experience है पढ़ाने का। पर मैं Chemistry और STEM पढ़ाती हूं। तो हमेशा ये ख्वाहिश रही थी कि Hindi जो अ मेरी language भी है, मैं और wider community से share करूं। तो इस course की वजह से मुझे वो मौका मिला है कि मैं अ community के साथ share कर सकती हूं। अब जब ये शुरुआत हुई थी, तब मैं अकेली थी। पर एक साल के बाद अभी मेरे पास पांच teacher है जो इनसे जुड़ना चाहते हैं। तो teachers चाहते हैं कि वो अपना culture, अपनी भाषा बच्चों के साथ share करें और जब Beacon जैसे program आते हैं और वहां Monash University से हमें जो support मिलता है curriculum development और pedagogy के लिए, उस वजह से अ teachers के लिए आसान हो जाता है। तो बहुत proud feel करते हैं कि हम इस देश में आकर भी अपना culture, अपने values, अपना tradition सबके साथ share कर सकते हैं।
क्या आने वाले समय में Victoria के बाकी स्कूलों में भी Hindi पढ़ना और पढ़ाना curriculum का एक हिस्सा हो सकता है?
बिल्कुल-बिल्कुल, इसमें कोई शक नहीं है। क्योंकि जब ये program शुरू हुआ तो केवल तीन ही schools ने participate किया था। पर आज हम तीन स्कूलों ने मिलकर एक groundwork पूरा कर लिया है। हमने basic curriculum development कर लिया है। हमने उससे related activities बना ली है। जो हमें लगता है कि अ जब नए schools आएंगे और हमसे जुड़ेंगे और ये करना चाहेंगे तो उन्हें शुरुआत नहीं करनी पड़ेगी। उनके लिए किसी ने, किसी ने groundwork करके रखा है। तो मैं यही कहना चाहूंगी SBS के माध्यम से कि आप अगर अपने school में Hindi शुरू करना चाहते हैं तो जरूर आइए, हमसे जुड़िए। हमने जो experience किया है, हमने जो अ मुश्किलें झेली और उसके बाद solution ढूंढा है, हम आपसे जरूर share करेंगे। हमारे resource share करेंगे। हमारे teachers आपके साथ जुड़ने में बहुत खुश होंगे। तो हम ये program आगे बढ़ाना चाहेंगे और Monash University भी आपके help कर सकता है इसमें।
इस मौके पर Monash University के Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International और Senior Vice President Professor Craig Jeffrey भी मौजूद थे। उन्होंने हमसे Hindi भाषा में बात की और इस पहल और भाषा के संस्कृतिक महत्व पर जोर दिया।
मेरा नाम Craig Jeffrey. मैं Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International हूं Monash University में। मैं महसूस करता हूं कि Hindi सीखने के मौका होना चाहिए Melbourne में और ये program इसके लिए बहुत अच्छी है। मैं पिछले 30 सालों से भारत आता-जाता रहता है और Hindi सीखने का मौका मिला तो मैं महसूस करता हूं कि मेरे जीवन के लिए, अ मेरे दोस्त बनने के लिए बहुत अच्छी बात है। अ मैं महसूस करता हूं कि सब लोग Hindi सिखाना चाहिए। Thank you.
वहीं Deputy Premier और Minister for Education Ben Carroll ने कहा कि Victoria में भारतीय मूल के लोग तेजी से बढ़ रहे हैं।और ऐसे पहल cultural connection के साथ साथ economic अवसर भी पैदा करते हैं।
Victoria is proud to the largest Indian population in the nation to the fastest growing languages are Hindi and Punjabi. That is why today through the support of our labor government, we're providing scholarships and seeing more teachers go out and teach Hindi and Punjabi. We know how important the future of our state and our nation and how intertwined it is to the future of India. So today, having 18 graduate teachers be graduating with Hindi and Punjabi certificates to go out now and teach that important resource in the classroom is so critical for our future, both economically, culturally, and making sure that we respect diversity and promote diversity. And that's what today's announcement is all about.
हिंदी बोलने वाले छात्रों के माता पिता के लिए संदेश देते हुए Ben Carroll ने कहा कि यह सिर्फ language learning नहीं बल्कि बच्चों के भविष्य में एक निवेश है जो उनके professional जीवन में भी काम आ सकता है।
My message to the parents of children that are learning Hindi and Punjabi is say what a wonderful investment in your children. Hindi and Punjabi are the fastest growing languages we have and this investment will ensure that they have a resume one day that has Hindi and Punjabi on it, putting them at the forefront of so many businesses, so many parts of the world that want to recruit your children one day to help combat some of the biggest challenges in the world too.
हिंदी और पंजाबी के अलावा क्या आने वाले समय में दूसरी भारतीय भाषाओं के लिए भी ऐसे कदम उठाए जाएंगे। इस पर Ben Carroll ने अपनी राय रखी।
Certainly language is so important. The diversity of our education state is so important. So this is an important first step on two of the fastest growing languages we have. But we're always looking to broaden what we can do in education state, making sure there is a wide curriculum and a wide opportunity for students to learn all languages in India and other parts of the world too.
