As Australia debates migration levels, new report from the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) shows migration is now a major driver of population growth in regional communities.
- The Regional Population Planning report found that the largest group of overseas migrants moving to regional Australia is aged 25 to 44, bringing workers and families to communities grappling with ageing populations and workforce shortages.
- More than 10 million people already call regional Australia home, accounting for 36.3 per cent of the national population.
- Employment opportunities, lifestyle and relatively affordable housing continue to draw people outside the major cities.
- The report suggests regional Australia's population could grow by 6.2 million people by 2050.
