Salam Fest Australia brings Islamic culture and art to the heart of Melbourne

The annual Salam Fest Australia recently transformed Melbourne's State Library into a vibrant celebration of Islamic art, music and culture. Through exhibitions, performances and traditional cuisine, the festival created space for connection and exchange. SBS Hindi spoke with visitors who said the festival challenged stereotypes, sparked meaningful conversations and brought communities together in a shared celebration of heritage and unity.

नमस्कार दोस्तों! ऑस्ट्रेलिया में सांस्कृतिक विविधता और सामाजिक एकता को मजबूत करने के उद्देश्य से आयोजित सलाम फेस्ट ऑस्ट्रेलिया इस वर्ष भी खास आकर्षण का केंद्र बना रहा। मेलबर्न में आयोजित इस भव्य उत्सव में हजारों लोगों ने भाग लिया, जहां इस्लामी कला, संगीत, साहित्य और पारंपरिक व्यंजनों की अनूठी झलक देखने को मिली। कार्यक्रम के दौरान Calligraphy प्रदर्शन, सांस्कृतिक नृत्य, Live performances और Interactive workshops ने दर्शकों को खासा प्रभावित किया। ऐसे में SBS हिंदी भी यहां पहुंचा और हमने बात की इस कार्यक्रम के host के साथ। अब्दुल्ला फैज बताते हैं कि ये कार्यक्रम एक पहल है जिसके माध्यम से अलग-अलग देशों में रह रहे लोगों को जो कि ऑस्ट्रेलिया में आकर बसते हैं, कला के माध्यम से जोड़ने की एक कोशिश की जा रही है।
Hi guys! My name is Abdullah Faisal. I'm from RMIT PSA and, um, yeah, today has been amazing, uh, we're the host of this, um, Salam Fest, uh, Qawwali night and yeah, looking forward to the qawwals performing and so far it has been amazing and yeah, looking forward to Farid Saab and Abu Saab performing. I think it's really important because, uh, it's a good way, a good initiative to actually bring the community together, especially when they're, uh, away from home, especially for international students as well. It makes them feel like home, uh, you know, and also for the other people, uh, who, who are not aware of our culture to actually experience it and get to know that better.
हमारी मुलाकात हुई जैस्मिन से जो, जो कि हमें भारतीय traditional कपड़ों, सूट-सलवार पहनकर इस कार्यक्रम से जुड़ती नजर आईं।
मैं यहां पे सलाम फेस्ट attend करने आई हूं। जैसे कि आप देख सकते हैं कि foreign country में अगर आपने अपना महसूस करना है तो ऐसे events ही होते हैं जहां पे आप आ सकते हो। Top to bottom, I'm all decked in my Indian attire. अ, यहां पे आकर इतना sufiana feel हो रहा है क्योंकि मैं sufi nights attend करती हूं other countries as well, but जो यहां पे माहौल है अपने लोगों के बीच में, वो बहुत अच्छा महसूस हो रहा है। Friends के साथ अलग, अलग vibe है, तो बहुत enjoy किया। Thank you so much, Salam Fest for organizing such an event.

I'm the MC today for Salam Fest's Qawwali Under the Stars and it's such a wonderful event to be a part of at a time where so much of the Australian community from many diaspora backgrounds are feeling the weight of loss, [सांस छोड़ती है] devastation and despair.
At the end of Ramzan-- Ramadan, we ha-- we enjoy our Eid celebration typically with, with family and friends in such positivity. This year it has definitely been marred by tragedies that are occurring overseas and unfolding. So to be able to host an event like Qawwali Under the Stars in the heart of Ma-- in the heart of Naarm in Melbourne,
with people walking by from so many different, you know, cultural backgrounds and faith backgrounds is such a testimony to the spirit of what Eid is about.
It's about unity in diversity. It's about bringing together, overcoming difference, but also celebrating identity and celebrating identity with pride and sovereignty. So I think above all else, I feel like
music and food and community and messages of
beloved, um, are a, are a, a form of healing and that's how I, that's how I'm experiencing this particular event. It's a form of communal healing and connection. It's amazing.
दुनियाभर में मुस्लिम समुदाय से ही नहीं, बल्कि इस कार्यक्रम में हमें विविध तरह के धर्मों के लोग जुड़ते दिखे जो कि इस्लामिक culture, खासकर कि कव्वाली में रुचि रखते हैं।

किरन के साथ शामिल थीं उनकी दोस्त महक, जिन्होंने हमें बताया कि आम जिंदगी में उन्हें अपनी पारंपरिक पोशाक यानी traditional outfits पहनने का मौका नहीं मिलता है। इसीलिए इस तरह के जो कार्यक्रम होते हैं, उनमें वे रुचि रखती हैं।
I'm here attending the Qawwali Fest and it's a surreal moment for me because I'm a big fan of qawwalis and I'm attending one in person and the weather is so apt. It's like winterish and we are here, we've gathered here in grace and it's been lovely and as you can see, I'm all dressed for it, so it was just an occasion for me to dress ethnically. मैंने कभी in-person attend नहीं किया है qawwali and this is my first time. तो मुझे बहुत मजा आ रहा है और आप देख सकते हो ये मेरे लिए एक बहाना था ethnic सब पहनने के लिए, so yeah.
आपको बता दूं कि इस बार इस कार्यक्रम का आयोजन मेलबर्न की State Library of Victoria में किया गया।
I love art and attending these events feels so good and the vibe here, as you can see, is just marvelous. State Library of Victoria is the sign of art in heart of Victoria and attending this event right here is extra special.
