Blending Jazz, Baul and regional folk music, Three Seas has emerged as a distinct cross-cultural collaboration. During their current tour of Australia, SBS Hindi spoke with Baul singer Raju Das, multi-instrumentalist Deoashish Mothey and drummer Gaurab Chatterjee about their musical rapport, creative exchange and the evolving language of fusion, as well as their work with Australian composer and saxophonist Matt Keegan, who leads the ensemble.

यह अनोखा संगीत जो आपने अभी सुना Three Seas Band द्वारा प्रस्तुत किया गया है जो इस समय Australia का दौरा कर रहे हैं। Three Seas एक cross cultural music band है जिसे Australia के saxophonist Matt Keegan ने 2009 में भारत में बनाया था। यह band बाऊल परंपरा, बंगाली लोक संगीत और आधुनिक धुनों का अनोखा मिश्रण पेश करता है। इस band में बाऊल गायक राजू दास, गायक और instrumentalist देवशीष मोथे और drummer गौरव चटर्जी शामिल हैं। आज ये हमारे साथ SBS Studio में हैं अपनी कहानी और संगीत साझा करने के लिए। तो आइए SBS Hindi पर उनका स्वागत करते हैं और बिना देर किए सवाल-जवाब का सिलसिला शुरू करते हैं। सबसे पहला question मेरा यह है कि आज दुनिया में बहुत कुछ चल रहा है। कहीं Trump की राजनीति है, कहीं Iran की स्थिति है, कहीं Ukraine और fuel crisis भी चल रहा है। तो ऐसे माहौल में आप जैसे कलाकारों से लोगों को क्या उम्मीद रखनी चाहिए और ऐसे समय में music का क्या role हो सकता है?
Actually music अगर आप देखो तो it is an unifier कहीं पर।
जब अभी इतना problem throughout globally अगर आप देखें and उसका impact तो you know everyone is facing that सबका life में उसका impact हो रहा है। ऐसा एक time में अभी अगर आप हमारा band की बात करें it is a cross cultural collaboration. अभी हम लोग तीन लोग हैं India से। The three of us have very different backgrounds to start with। राजू दास बाऊल है। बाऊल tradition जो है हमारा Bengal का कि Bangladesh का भी है। वह you know it's more than thousands of years old and वह present generation एक बाऊल है। देवाशीष मोथे है कलिम्पोंग से। उनका
नेपाली heritage है। He is from a very different background. वह इतना दिन शांतिनिकेतन में भी थे। वहां पर उसका exposure हुआ बाऊल singers के साथ, बाऊल musicians के साथ। तो उसका जो combination है नेपाली और later you know Bengal का जो combination है with that makes him very unique because वह दोतारा भी बजाते हैं जो है Bengal का instrument. वह माचुंगा बजाता है which is from the mountains again. वह नेपाली में गाते हैं उनका जो mother tongue है and मैं, मैं I am from Kolkata. मैं actually originally एक rock musician हूं। लेकिन with time I started you know discovering my roots as well which is where the love for बाऊल music also comes और so the three of us are very different and then हम
collaborate कर रहे हैं Australia का जो musicians है Matt Keegan हमारा जो band leader है saxophone player अभी हारमोनियम भी बजा रहा है। Matt Keegan हमारा bass player है Brendon Clark और guitar player है Hilary Geddes. तो यह तीनों jazz musicians हैं, rock musicians हैं Australia का। So यह सब हम एक साथ different cultures, different backgrounds से हैं। एक साथ मिलकर हम जो music create कर रहे हैं ना वह that is indeed an example of unification. तो अभी यह difficult time में it's very important कि हम artist or musician जो भी बोले it's very important for us to make sure that we spread love and you know there is a lot of hatred everywhere if you look at it you know even if you look at social media. अब जब देखोगे ना there is hatred का ना एक, एक business हो रहा है how to sell hate. In a situation like that हम लोगों का I think it's a duty कि हम सबको unify करें। हमारा music is also like that and yeah यह बहुत important role है अभी हम लोगों का।
जी और उसी से मेरा अगला सवाल है कि आप सब अलग-अलग शैली में instruments बजाते हैं और आपका जो music है उसको हम borderless कह सकते हैं। तो अलग-अलग जो cultures की अभी आपने बात की उसको असली रूप में रखना, उसको authenticity में रखने के लिए आप क्या करते हैं और उसके साथ-साथ आप कुछ नया कैसे बनाते हैं? क्योंकि यही एक आपस में कुछ challenge है कि आपको authenticity भी रखनी है और साथ में कुछ नया भी दिखाना है।
I think इसका biggest credit Matt का है Matt Keegan जो हमारा band leader है क्योंकि जब वह band form किए he made sure कि हम लोग you know we remain the way we are. हमारा जो originally जो जैसे है हम हमारा जो elements है वह natural रह जाए and you know वह he would give that space. तो यह project में ना everyone is themselves और जो मिलते हैं ना वह बहुत organically होता है। कभी ऐसा नहीं हुआ कि okay now we will do this kind of a fusion let's all do it like that. It is not like that. It has been very organic and Matt has had a major role to play with that fight that way. So सब ही we are all developing Matt भी खामोक या डुपकी या दोतारा जैसे बजता है ना वह follow करके वह भी एक style develop किया है saxophone में भी। वह अभी हारमोनियम भी बजा रहा है but very different approach from a saxophone player's point of view which itself unique है बहुत और Devashish keeps on adding his new instruments all the time. So we are also growing with the band or as, as he actually said that this is a family I mean and I think for all of us that is how we love you know it you know that is how a band should be that is how we feel.
आपने family की बात की वैसे कहा जाए तो आपकी family थोड़ी long distance family भी हो सकती है। क्योंकि Matt यहां है और आप India में हैं। यह बताएं कि जब आप jamming करते हैं तो वह किस तरीके से क्या आप technology use करते हैं या वह आते हैं आपके पास या आप इधर आते हैं?
जब tour होता है ना तो वैसे ही-
पहले आ जाते हैं फिर कुछ rehearsal रहते हैं हम लोगों के।Basically सब याद रहता है फिर भी कुछ rehearsal रखते हैं क्योंकि बहुत show रहता है और बहुत important show रहता है। अभी तो कितना 12 show।
12 show में चार हुआ है। इसके बाद भी और shows है। आप जो small town के बाद किए ना आप हम जाएंगे major city Brisbane जाएंगे Sydney में लौटेंगे वहां पर भी show है लेकिन इसके अलावा भी Bell ingen है Port Macquarie है Wolongong है Milton है Mulumbimbi है so यह towns में है और Milton में हम लोग एक jazz blues festival में ही बजाएंगे which is really exciting बहुत अच्छा artist lineup है और I think हम सबके लिए यह भी एक बहुत important part है कि हम आकर ना explore करते हैं सब जगह
नया musician से मिलते हैं we get to meet new people उसके साथ interaction फिर सुनते हैं बाकी artist को भी that is also a beautiful experience getting introduced to new music वह एक।
और एक भी अच्छा बात है यह हमारा album अभी number 10 में है।
European charts में world music charts में।
यह तो बहुत अच्छा संग बात है।
आप सिर्फ India में नहीं सिर्फ Australia में नहीं पूरे दुनिया में अच्छा है। आपने सीखने सिखाने की बात की तो आप यहां Australia में आए हुए हैं यहां पर First Nations के बहुत लोग रहते हैं और original population यहां First Nations की है। यहां का जो local culture है उसके बीच आपको कोई दिलचस्प connection दिखा क्या आपने didgeridoo बजाया क्या आपने seed rattle के साथ experiment किया?
देखा तो बहुत didgeridoo बजाने।
बजाने वाले।
उसका art भी देखा वहां का it is also beautiful and fascinating और कहीं पर भी you know it is very unique लेकिन कहीं पर भी connection है।
जी connection के ऊपर आपको आप सब अगर मुझे अपना सबसे यादगार पल share करें कि कभी आपकी audience का जो reaction था चाहे अच्छा हो जो बुरा है चाहे अंडे फेंके हो तो ऐसा भी कुछ हो।

अंडे तो नहीं फेंका बहुत प्यार फेंका है।
तो क्या होता है मुझे अच्छा लगता है क्योंकि मैं यहां पर बहुत workshop किया हम हमारा band Three Seas तो मुझे अच्छा लगा पहले बार Melbourne University में हम लोग workshop किया मुझे अच्छा लगता है कोई ना बहुत वहां का student जानना चाहता है यह जो बाऊल का instrument है खामक क्या है और दोतरा क्या है कैसे बजाता है कैसे होता है तो मुझे अच्छा लगता है वह लोग
समझना चाहता है कि कैसे कैसे यह कहां से है।
Melbourne University में सब तो foreigner student है तो वह लोग जानते नहीं है बाऊल गाना क्या है यह दोतरा क्या है तो वह लोग सीखना चाहता है यह मुझे बहुत अच्छा लगा जो मैं अच्छे से सिखा रहा हूं अच्छे से वह लोग जान रहे हैं यह मुझे अच्छा लग रहा है यह मुझे बहुत ही प्यारा लग रहा है क्योंकि वह लोग जानना चाहते हैं।
और जरूरी नहीं है कि सिर्फ foreigners या यहां के लोग जानना चाहते हैं हम खुद इसके बारे में जानना चाहेंगे और उससे अभी आप उसका सवाल भी करेंगे पर आपसे जो आखिरी एक दो सवाल हैं कि अब जो आगे अगर हम भविष्य की बात करें future की बात करें तो सबसे ज्यादा किस चीज को लेकर excited हैं आप?
Actually अभी at this moment जो current tour है ना यह तो बहुत important है अभी भी बाकी।
और हमारा नया album अंतत:।
नया album का ही tour है spreading that music to everyone what is really amazing is जब हम शुरू किए थे essentially jazz music का जो audience थे वह सिर्फ आते थे अभी क्या हो रहा है you have the people from the jazz scene you have people who love folk music different kinds of folk music they are also coming the Indian diaspora the Nepali diaspora the Bangladeshi diaspora you know people from South Asian diaspora they are also coming
so we can see that with time the audience in Australia is also getting bigger with every tour and that is really exciting so of course to you know finish the tour successfully and then you know spread our music to more people I think that is what we love traveling playing music meeting new people interacting new people interacting with new cultures so वही तो future plan है।
