The Federal Government is warned of a population crisis, while new research shows Australia's birth rate is falling rapidly.

Families experiencing difficulties said more support, including cheaper child care and extended paid parental leave, should be included in future Budgets.

Each year around 300,000 babies are born in Australia.

A new population study predicts that there will be far fewer babies born, with the average fertility rate over the next five years expected to fall to the lowest levels ever recorded.

The analysis has been compiled by Australian National University demographer Peter McDonald for the government's Center for Population.
