An inspirational young Indonesian’s win in an international AI challenge will help combat bushfires in Australia

The 2021 Better Working World Data Challenge brought together thousands of the brightest young data scientists from all over the world. They competed to find AI solutions to improve the speed and effectiveness of fire-fighting by organisations like Australia’s Country Fire Authority. A young Indonesian won the Challenge 2 Fire Behaviour category. He tells his story.


Tjia Johan Setiawan used his background in engineering and robotics to find an AI solution to help replacing slow manual handling of data about bushfire behaviour.  It is a solution that could save lives. He explains his solution to Sri Dean and the techniques and strategies he applied to succeed at the international level.
