On 23 July 2020 the Federal Treasurer announced a budget update, including an announcement about changes to Job Keeper and Job Seeker payments. He later prompted debate about the future direction of Australian budgetary strategy by suggesting that the policies for economic recovery used by Margret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan had merit.


Nurina Merdikawati is a PhD candidate in the Crawford School of Public Policy, at the Australian National University. She suggests that the Government’s future budgetary strategy will depend a lot on adapting to a very dynamic economic environment.
