A recent report from the John Curtin Research Centre reveals that Australia does not currently have a national strategy to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in work environments.
In a forum in Adelaide, stakeholders discussed the fact that AI's impact on the workforce is more determined by political policy than the technology itself.
Although the Australian government claims it is building a foundation of trust and security, data shows that almost 60 per cent of employees already use AI routinely, but many do so without the knowledge of superiors.
Key concerns emerged from experts and unions regarding the potential of AI in increasing excessive surveillance, unsafe workloads, as well as uncertainty about the fate of workers.
Dr. Dominic Meagher emphasizes the need for strengthening regulatory frameworks to prevent polarization of information and negative impact on mental productivity.
On the other hand, Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth acknowledged public anxiety over job security, although she remained optimistic of the potential for increased national productivity if the technology was managed with proper collaboration between government, business, and the public.
