The report found the total cost of the adult prison system in Victoria in 2021-2022 was $1.3 billion, and another $220 million was spent on detention of children.
That translates to more than $5,000 per child per day, or $1.8 million per child over the course of the year. It
is also reported that the state of detention across the country is heading in the wrong direction, particularly for First Nations people.
