Indonesian diaspora in Australia welcome the launch of Global Citizenship of Indonesia (GCI), though they say their decision to apply hinges on requirements, costs, and entitlements that officials have yet to release.

Indonesia's Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, launched the Global Citizenship of Indonesia (GCI) policy on 20 November 2025, sparking interest among the Indonesian diaspora in Australia. Many residents, however, are still seeking clarity on the requirements.

Officials are positioning GCI as a solution to the dual citizenship issue. The policy offers permanent residency without time limits to foreign nationals who have blood ties, family connections, historical links, or strong relationships with Indonesia.

SBS Indonesian spoke with three members of the Indonesian diaspora in Australia to find out their views on this new policy.

Mr Handi, a former Indonesian citizen who holds Australian citizenship, said he's interested in applying for GCI but plans to wait until the government releases the complete requirements. Indonesian citizens Mr Said and Mrs Amelia shared their thoughts on the permanent residency scheme. While GCI sounds promising, whether they proceed with changing citizenship will come down to the specifics.
