On 24 February Vladimir Putin launched an attack on Ukraine. Prior to the attack the United States and Europe had already imposed economic sanctions on Russia. They announced harsher sanctions after Russia attacked. How effective can those sanctions be?


Marten Hanura is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Relation at Diponegoro University in Semarang.   Just as Russia began the attack, he explained to Sri Dean why identity is an important factor in the conflict and then considered how effective economic sanctions might be in stopping the war.
